BP9_Teacher Tube

     So, I have a question for all of you teachers out there...Have you ever wanted to show your class something that maybe you saw at home on your personal computer and when you go to school the next day and you go to access the website it is blocked? I cannot tell you the number of times that I have wanted to do that with a video that I saw on Youtube.com. Well, somebody much smarter than I came up with a solution and it is called Teachertube.com. In the image above, I had searched the kennedy assassination and there was the Zapruder film. The neat thing about teacher tube is that it is generally not blocked by school filtering systems, and if it is blocked it is usually an easy request to unblock it. Teacher tube is created as a site that promotes educationally sound videos. Joining Teacher Tube is free and easy, and once you are a member, you can upload videos as well. Educators are encouraged to comment on video's, and I even found a link at the bottom of the search results page for lesson plans that could be used in a number of different subjects.
     Under the video that is playing is a text box where members leave comments about the video and could even offer some uses of the video being presented. This is designed in the same manner as Youtube, but this has been created by educators, so content is not an issue. Also on the page with the video is a place for you to get the embed code for the video and/or the link to post the video on a website or a blog. Just like youtube, there is information on the person that uploaded the video and a link to other video's that that user has posted on teacher tube as well. There is a rating system where members can rate the video, and one thing that I liked is that in the place where it tells about the person that uploaded the video, it also tells what age group the video might be most beneficial for. In the case of my screen shot, it says high school. I hope you have enjoyed reading about Teacher tube and you might find a way to use it in your classroom.

After viewing the Lynda.com tutorials on iMovie, I had no idea that you could use pictures and make a movie from them. So, I took some pictures of my kids and me and put them together to make a video entitled "Special Moments." I hope you enjoy it.

PE4_Garageband

     This is a screen shot from my garageband, and I want to tell you a little about it. Garageband is a music program on Mac that is a very cool tool. There are a number of things in Garageband that would be beneficial in the music theater, most notably the podcasting. I could see a great benefit to podcasting in music theater and using that as a means to deliver character development, costuming, making notes on video or pictures that are posted to the music theater website. Garageband also fosters creativity, and since I teach music theater, I could see using this as a rehearsal tool for creating an accompaniment and uploading it to the website so that students could use it as a rehearsal help. There would be a way to work in each part in Garageband so that each member in the chorus could hear their individual part and then how their part fits in with the others.
     Another way that Garageband could be used in the music theater classroom is to use it when I teach my play writing portion of my curriculum. Students could either use it as a music composition tool, since there are provisions to record you playing instruments, or as a podcasting tool again where students could record a scene in a play that has no music to help with memorization and flow. Garageband is a user friendly application and I know that it could be a benefit to students and myself in the classroom.

     I would like to take a minute and tell you how easy it was to create and start uploading pictures to Flickr. Flickr is a Web 2.0 tool that allows you to see photos and videos of other members and also you can upload your own too. I created this account in about ten minutes and I have already uploaded 13 pictures of NYC and my kids.
    When you first go to the Flickr page and create an account, you can use your Yahoo ID to sign up. This was easy for me since I already had a Yahoo email account, but if you do not, it is a really easy task. Once you have signed up, there is a start page that allows you to instantly start uploading photos. After you have selected and uploaded your photos, you can add tags, make sets, create a group, and tell about the pictures that you have just uploaded. If you follow the link to my photos, you will see the photos that I have uploaded in just this short time.
    I have an idea for using this in my classroom setting. Once we have done a show, there are always tons of pictures that I take, parents take, and cast and crew take. One thing that Flickr would allow us to do is to upload those pictures to one album and then we could allow comments on each picture in the album. I put a picture of the cast of AIDA which I directed in the Spring of 2010. The neat thing is that I could have my students follow me on Flickr and then they would be allowed to make comments on any picture that they saw that was mine.

BP4_discovering web 2.0 tools

Here is the second installment of my blog and I hope that I am doing this correctly. The Web 2.0 tool that I choose to try out was simple diagrams. http://www.simplediagrams.com/
This is just a basic tool that you can download a free trial version and create diagrams. I thought that this might be a useful tool when making a flow chart or something that tells what you hope to accomplish. The chart below is one that I made in just about 5 minutes of playing with the program:

As you can see, it is just a basic tool that lets you outline your ideas. After exporting this to my documents, it was saved rather small, which is kind of a drag. This was done using the free version, and the biggest drawback to the free version is that you cannot save your images in the program. That is something that comes with an upgrade to the premium version which is only $19. Of course there are bigger and better programs out there on the web that allows you to do much more, but this is just a good basic tool.
     I think that if my students were to use this in class, they might be able to assess where a character is going and watch their development. It might also be used to track scenery and/or costumes that might arise during a play.

Who am I

     Well, here goes, my first blog posting. Let me start by telling you a little about me. I am a 43 year old graduate student at Full Sail University in the field of Educational Media and Design Technology. What, you may ask, possessed me to go back to school after graduating 19 years ago from Liberty University? I have long wanted to get a masters degree and I finally had the chance this last Summer to take advantage of that. Ultimately, I would like to teach at the college level, and I need that Masters degree to help facilitate that.
     I am a husband and a father. I have 3 children that I have fathered myself, and I have step children as well. Life has been hard for the most part (3 marriages, work issues, ex issues), but I am making the most of what I have to work with. I credit my teammates at Full Sail for helping me keep focused on the goal. I also credit my family for their immense support. My two daughters are at Florida State University, one an Art major with a music minor, and one a Music Education major. They are remarkable and are doing so much better in school than I did, but isn't that what we as parents want.....for our children to do better than we did and not to make the same mistakes we made?
     I am also a performer. I have played violin for 33 years now and piano for about 30 years. I have acted in many musicals and I have directed many musicals as well. I actually am working with a team of writers at this time creating a new Broadway musical based on the book of Solomon in the Bible. The main composer actually wants me to come to NY and audition for some shows. He is a pit musician for Lion King and In The Heights, and I am so tempted. I have made more trips to NY to work on the show and to do research for the show that we are writing. Who knows....Maybe I will. LOL
     I am sure that more post are forthcoming and I am excited to see who will actually follow this. Thanks for reading.
